This Monday at 1PM EST, the first Apple event of 2016 will kick off on Apple’s campus town hall. This could be the last to be held there before Apple moves to their new HQ at the beginning of 2017 if all goes well. Here are my expectations for the event.
On Apple vs FBI, I do expect some allusions about the whole security versus privacy matter. At the very least, I expect people in the crowd to show their support for Tim Cook in the form of a standing ovation. This is a small venue to hold an event but still, there is always a bunch of Apple employees attending and they will show their support. The issue is too important to keep it quiet.
On the hardware side, obviously, I don’t expect many surprises because well, the smaller iPad Pro seems a given and the same goes for the iPhone SE. On the latter, I would have liked a better naming scheme but recent picture of the packaging seems to confirm the name. Too bad. I was there when Apple announced the Mac SE. This wasn’t a great time for Apple. Bad souvenirs. Finally, it seems the Apple Watch will get new bands. This will keep customers busy while waiting for the next iteration of the device maybe this fall. We’ll see. Finally, I wish for an updated Mac mini or beefed up 12" MacBook but I think we’ll have to wait for WWDC 2016 for these to show up.
On the software side, iOS 9.3, tvOS 9.2 and OS X 10.11.4 are all to be released next week. I expect Apple to show new features for them, mainly for the Apple TV. Eddy Cue mentioned a while back that an iTunes refresh was to be released in the coming weeks. Next week seems a good fit for it. Nothing major there also… Probably a few tweaks to make Apple Music more enjoyable to use so more users get on board and pay for the service. Another thing that could be released next week is the rumoured redesigned Apple Remote app. Coupled with tvOS 9.2 this could be a nice addition to the mix in order to help push the new Apple TV even more.
So, new iPad Pro, new iPhone SE, new Apple Watch accessories, new software releases… Anything else? I don’t think so.
